What are the recommendations for heart screening?

Heart screening has been compulsory for individuals competing in athletic sports in Italy since 1982 and has been shown to reduce the incidence of SCD.

The European Society of Cardiology and the International Olympic Committee, recommend cardiac screening for any young person taking part in competitive sport.

In some professions heart testing is mandatory. FIFA and UEFA regulations stipulate that first squad players at a football club that participates in international competition must have a minimum of one ECG and one Echo in their personal medical records.

As part of the FA Medical Education Centre Screening Programme, young footballers (FA Academy scholars) are offered the chance to undergo heart screening with a medical questionnaire, ECG and ECHO.
